1 million copy-protected CDs released

The Israeli security company Midbar said Wednesday that it has already released 1 million copy-protected CDs in the European market. The copy protection is called Cactus Data Shield, which we already reported abour earlier.

Midbar said the CDs are protected by its technology, dubbed Cactus Data Shield, which prevents potential copyright pirates from illegally reproducing the content.

The company said its CDs can play on all types of machines without any alterations to the quality of the recording or the abilities of the playback machinery itself.

People on CD Freaks already reported you can easily bypass this protection with CloneCD (subchannels in audio-data). The protection is also found by Clony.

Lasy year Midbar already worked together with BMG to protect their CDs. This effort failed. BMG is now working with SunnComm, Midbar, Macrovision and some other companies, on a copy protection that works. It seems the industry is working very hard to find new ways of protecting. But how about the value of the cd's? Will they compensate us for not letting us make a backup (if they even succeed...)?
