Via
CDRLabs.com I found some
interesting news at heise online
about coming DVD writers from Samsung. The news article is in German but here is
a short summary in English:
In October
Samsung plans to release a 4x DVD±R/RW writer based on the NEC
ND-1300A.
- In
December a Samsung-made model, the SR-P80B, will follow capable of
writing 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD-R.
- DVD-RAM support will be
dropped on DVD writers sold outside Asia.
The first optical
drives with S-ATA interface will be released in June
2004.
Samsung's roadmap also
includes a 16x DVD writer, the SR-W16B, already in July
2004.
According to the
roadmap a Blu-Ray drive should also be released in Q2
2005.

A 16x DVD writer in July next year sounds nice but don't hold your breath
because even Samsung's German sales director, Werner
Handke, admits that the date is probably a bit too optimistic. You can find the complete article
in German here and the Babelfish translation here.
