A report by TNS and The Conference Board concludes that one-fifth of all Internet users in the United States watch TV shows online. TNS and The Conference Board came with this conclusion after looking at the habits of 10,000 households, says Home Media Magazine.
The figure of online TV watchers has doubled since 2006, which shows that consumers are happy with the flexibility and rather plan their own time, instead of watching when a broadcaster says so. "Being able to watch broadcasts on their own time and at their convenience are clearly reasons why we are seeing a greater number turning to the Internet. And, it is the reason why we would expect to see this trend continue," says Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Reasearch Center.
Slowly we've seen that Video on Demand is becoming more and more popular. TNS' SVP of brand and communications, Michael Saxon, added that the swift from appointment TV to content on the demand is well underway.
Although online content can be viewed anywhere 9 out of 10 respondents stated that they were watching content almost exclusively at home. The survey showed that most consumers prefer to watch news, drama, comedies and sports.
