Robert Moore, founder of the three year old 321 Studios,
provider of several backup software packages and other optical storage products, was up on Capitol Hill Wednesday, arguing for Fair Use. He is saying that his customers are people, not pirates and should be allowed to make copies of copyrighted works that they own for personal use.

"Our customers are ordinary and honest Americans - moms and dads, artists and educators, librarians and movie buffs. These customers just want to keep their expensive collections safe so they can enjoy them for years to come," Moore said. He added that if consumers can copy CDs or record movies and television programs on VHS tapes, they should be allowed to do the same with DVDs. "How can it be that consumers are criminals for making a backup copy of a DVD they've bought and paid for and why is our company - indeed any technology company - criminal for selling them the digital tools that they must have to make their rights real," Moore asked. |
MPAA frontman Jack Valenti meantime, is wringing his hands fearing that if lawmakers legalise the circumvention of the copy protection, then it will be impossible to protect them.
