Panasonic has just dropped the retail price of its Blu-ray Disc Combo drive, SW-4583, to 988 yuan in China. This is interesting since the drive originally cost 1,999 yuan but dropped to 1,299 last week before reaching its most recent price of 988 yuan. The funny thing here is that we notice a 50.6% price decrease in only a week.
A reason behind this could be Pioneer's price drop to 999 yuan recently meaning Panasonic follows its competitor. This month we will also see the release of a Sony Blu-ray Combo Drive which could even drive the prices down.
Other parties that have release plans are Lite-On IT and LG, who will release BD Combo Drives in August (Lite-On) and at the start of this year's third quarter (LG).
