8GB PSP, mobile DVD viewing without the DVD or UMD?

mrdataNY used our news submit to tell us "If this comes true, perhaps I will have a reason to get one of these. That is, if the price is fair..."

Apparently, the device will have either a microdrive or a NAND flash memory. But prices on the memory components are a stumbling block, leading to negotiations to fall apart February 16. I must say that the PSP is an attractive device for a mobile media player. I was looking at one and almost considered buying it, then I remembered Sony decided to not allow the sale of blank UMD discs, so to me, it was worthless as a portable device for media transfer and playback. What were they thinking?

Sony has a new PSP on the way and it will have 8GB of memory. What remains to be seen is what form that memory will take. Initial reports were that it would be NAND Flash, but it appears now that Sony and Samsung are having trouble agreeing on a price. If that's the case, Sony may look at a Microdrive instead.

We have to believe that now Sony are coming to their senses as it is widespread that the UMD movies are not selling as well as expected. Folks apparently do not want to buy a UMD movie just so they can play it in the PSP, especially if they already forked out for the DVD. Now at least there will (hopefully) be a way to use this device as a method of storing all sorts of digitized information, for viewing on the go, helping to justify the cost in consumers minds. If they hobble the new storage medium though, whatever it is, they may as well brace themselves for another barrage of negative publicity.
