DVD Forum recently unveiled that
the specifications for its coming DVD-R DL format will have a basic recording
speed of 2x with 4x speed being optional. Already in the beginning of next year
the DVD+RW Alliance however plans to beat its competitor and release official
specifications for 8x DVD+R DL. According to AV watch Mitsubishi
and Ricoh are working on 8x DVD+R DL media and Philips is developing an 8x
DVD+R DL writer scheduled to be released in the first quarter next year.
Recently Ritek also
unveiled that it is working on 8x DVD+R DL media.
At 8x speed it will take less than
16 minutes to write a full 8.5 GB DL disc. Currently the fastest announced DL
writer is Toshiba's SD-R5372 capable of writing DVD+R DL at 5x speed, although
there are no official specifications for this speed. More information is
available at AV watch here (Babelfish translation).
