It seems that a new technology will help motion picture movie studios to fight piracy. It consists of embedding a radio transmitter chip on DVD discs enabling the player to understand if the disc is a genuine or an illegal one.

Home DVD players will eventually be able to check on the chip embedded in a disc, and refuse to play discs which are copied or played in the 'wrong' geographical region, the companies behind the technology expect. |
I still don't understand why studios don't want people being able to play movies from a different region. If, for example, an Italian person works in USA, and he/she still wants to watch movies bought in Italy, regional codes don't allow this. I can understand that studios will be very happy if that person will purchase more movies, but I'm sure that this is not an acceptable option for that person 😉
Now with Blu-ray and HD-DVD, studios want to add additional difficulty to end-consumers. I wonder how much time is necessary for the studios to understand that the only way to eliminate piracy is lowering prices. 😉
