ALi introduces new integrated DVD audio/video decoder chip

Acer Laboratories (ALi) has announced a new integrated DVD audio/video (A/V) decoder '“ the M3325/M3327. The M3325 and M3327 chips should provide more functions for your home entertainment, such as DVD players and STBs (set-top boxes).

The company claims that the M3325 offers great image quality and leading-edge A/V performance and is regarded as the most advanced solution for next-generation DVD player applications. It has an advanced MPEG-2 core with integrated micro-controller unit (MCU), progressive scan processor, TV encoder, audio ADC and professional karaoke. The highly integrated single chip solutions eliminate the need for extra external chips, reducing overall system costs.

The M3325 DVD A/V decoder supports MPEG-2's Main Profile at Main Level (MP@ML) and JPEG decoding. It also features functions such as DVD/VCD movie disc playback and digital photo browsing. M3325's audio algorithms decode MPEG-1 layers 1 and 2, MP3, MPEG-2 multi-channel, Dolby ProLogic II, Dolby Digital, Digital Theater System (DTS), High Definition CD (HDCD) and Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA). In addition, the audio post-processing of the M3325 supports cinema sound effects and Virtual Surround for multi-channel output on a fixed two-channel speaker environment.

Unfortunately this chipset has also this: The M3327 adds MLP decode, Copy Protection for Pre-recorded Media (CPPM) encryption and audio watermark detection.

Let's hope this won't become a trend...
