MrDish2000 lets us know that according to sources, Taiwan based AOpen has started shipping slim-type DVD+R/RW drives to the Japanese Ricoh company:
AOpen primarily makes PC-use half-height optical storage drives but has been driven by the stiff price competition in that market to try its hand at manufacturing notebook-use slim-type optical storage drives, which command higher profit margins due to higher entry barriers. |
Currently, the world's top five slim-type optical storage drive suppliers are Japanese companies. Taiwanese manufacturers produce mainly slim-type combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drives. AOpen is the first Taiwanese company to produce slim-type DVD+R/RW drives, sources said.
According to the article Ricoh has started shipping the products this month at 10,000 units per month.
