Advanced Media, Inc., a manufacturer and marketer of the well known RIDATA brand has introduced Double Sided 8x DVD+R, which features 9.4GB of capacity. As each side is single layer, the disc has the advantage of offering the same compatibility as a regular singled sided single layer version, which allows it to be used in standalone DVD recorders and early DVD writers that lack double layer DVD+R support as well as in players that give issues reading back double layer DVD+R media. For multi-disc archival and back-up, these discs also offer the advantage of cutting the amount of discs required by half, while still working out cheaper than using double layer discs.
Ritek claims to be the only manufacturer that also uses a flexible manufacturing system, where it can be quickly adapted to support new technologies, unlike the inline systems used by most other optical disc manufacturers. These discs have begun shipping and are priced with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of US$0.70 per disc.
