DisplaySearch analysts predict OLEDs will dominate the market and become the growing material application used in electronics, but won't really pick up until 2011. The technology is still too costly to be used as a lighting source, but it will only take a couple of years before the price drops enough for mainstream adoption to begin.
The cost of OLED development has remained high, but has slowly dropped over the past few quarters, and will continue to decline in price. They'll have a wide range of uses, ranging from mobile phones to military development, and offers solid power efficiency.
Once OLEDs really begin to control the market, analysts predict the OLED lighting market alone will be valued at $6 billion by 2018.
"The unique features of OLED lighting are inspiring the imagination of designers," DisplaySearch Director of Display Technologies Jennifer Colegrove said in a statement. "OLED lighting devices emit from the surface, can be made flexible/roollable, and even transparent like a window or reflective like a mirror."
There are already around 20 OLED lamps, but because they cannot be mass produced cheaply yet, they aren't good for commercial development.
