During the last quarter Apple earned $1.05 billion, which according to Apple makes them the number one US music retailer. “We continue to achieve our objectives of maintaining our high MP3 market share in the U.S. and gaining share internationally,” Apple CFO and SVP Peter Oppenheimer told Home Media Magazine yesterday. The company didn't say if consumers are buying movies and television shows from their online stores. Oppenheimer did say that the $1.05 billion revenue was grouped with sales of iPod services and iPod accessories.
A study from the NDP group showed that Apple has a market share of 73% in the US MP3 market. “Sales from iTunes were very strong in the quarter and NPD reported that we have surpassed Wal-Mart to become the largest music retailer in the United States. The iTunes store has over 50 million customers and over 85% share of the US market for legally purchased and downloadable music.”
Besides selling music and movies, Apple also offers a rental service, which was "well-received" by customers. The interview ended, and Oppenheimer said Apple will expand their video-content offerings internationally.
