Artec to begin mass-producing optical drives in April

DigiTimes.com reports that Artec will begin mass production of optical drives in April of this year and besides that they plan to bring out 40x cd-rw and combo-drives out in volume too:

Ultima Electronics (Artec) confirmed that its plant in Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, will begin volume production in April, bringing monthly optical drive shipments up to 1.5 million units. Within six months, the company's Dongguan, Guangdong Province, plant will gradually downsize and its staff and equipment will be completely transferred to the Wujiang plant.

The company pointed out that since its Dongguan plant lacks the economies of scale to bid for orders from top PC vendors, the company decided to move operation to a larger site in Wujiang. Ultima will begin mass-producing CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, CD-R and MP3 players in Wujiang next month, and has plans to enter the production of consumer electronics such as DVD players.

Besides aggressively bidding for orders from international PC vendors and distributors in the US and Europe, Ultima, who already controls a 30% share of China's optical drive market, will continue its strong efforts on the mainland.

Ultima's optical drive shipments are currently about 500,000-600,000 units per month, up from last year's monthly shipments of 200,000-300,000 units. The company is quickly catching up with market leaders Benq (formerly Acer Communications & Multimedia, ACM) and Behavior Tech Computer (BTC) in both capacity and product development. Its 40x CD-R and Combo drives (CD-R and DVD-ROM) are also scheduled to soon enter volume production.

An increase of 200k+ units to 500k+ units ?
Talk about growth...
