DAEMON Tools is software that allows you to run a game from
hard disc instead of inserting the original CD-ROM. When you install the
software it will add a virtual CD/DVD-ROM drive to your computer. The computer
thinks it's an actual drive but instead the software reads the information from
your hard drive. Simplified it translates the CD/DVD read commands the software
sends to the CD/DVD-ROM drive to hard disk reading commands.
It is used to speed up loading times but also used
in the warez scenes to load (mount) downloaded images without burning them to a
CD-R. The software has also the ability to emulate copy protections. Now one of
our moderators (spath) has taken a look at the software and explains what the
software does, where it's good in and where it fails. It's an intresting read
for anyone using the software and hopefully the author of DAEMON Tools will be
able to improve his software with the tips from spath who also wrote several
articles on how copy protections work.
