Reuters reports that an Asian website is currently selling movie
blockbusters such as Terminator 3 and Charlies Angels 2 on DVDs. The website
seems to be based in Malaysia and also has a relation to someone in China. The
MPAA is expecting to take down the website very soon.
Tom Temple, director of worldwide Internet
enforcement for the Motion Picture Association of America, said it would
not take long to shut the operation down. "These are two places
where our takedown notices don't get a lot of attention," he said. "In
these cases we undertake actual criminal investigations and raids."
He added that the MPAA's program in Malaysia is improving the
situation there. In the United States, Internet service providers act
quickly to remove sites as soon as they're notified of infringing
activity, according to Temple. The MPAA said that it is getting a
lot of cooperation in its efforts from legitimate companies. DHL
delivery service, for example, voluntarily chose to stop shipping optical
discs out of Malaysia. Additionally, Custom and Excise officials are
watching exports as well as
imports. |
