BMG: audio copy protection causes lower sales

Audio copy protections, which were made to prevent people from making any backups of their legally purchased discs, are annoying, since they sometimes prevent proper playback not only on PCs, but also in some other players.

BMG and Universal Music have now realized that these copy protections are not only uneffective, but that customers are unsatisfied with this, which could lead to decreasing sales and cause financial losses.

Translated from French:

"From our point of view, the copy protections on CDs aren't as efficient as we hoped", acknowledges Christina Haussler, vice-president of new technologies at BMG Entertainment. The group especially fears that its American clients are diverted from their products. "Untill now, the European consumers use their computer less for listening to CDs", she explains. "This has made the task of record companies who want to introduce anticopy technologies easier, they don't have to fear the consumer anger, even if the percentage of PC equipment in Europe increases and comes closer to the American percentage.".
