Ballmer predicts the next generation XBox will overtake Sony

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Steve Ballmer recently granted an interview with C|Net, where he talked a bit about innovation at Microsoft. Or maybe it was the lack of it, i.e. iTunes and search engines like Google coming along first. Quite boring actually. Then out of the blue, he produced his crystal ball to give us a projection for the future concerning the next generation XBox and it's impact on Sony.

I am betting we can take Sony in the next generation.
I think the work that Bill (Gates) and I have been doing, really together, is to make sure we are investing in new areas. Look at what we have done with Xbox. We may still be losing money, but we have gone from nowhere to a significant player with a whole different approach. We've generated something brand new. I bet we can take Sony next generation. I am betting we can take Sony in the next generation.

Unfortunately he didn't elaborate on why he was ready to make such a statement.  I wouldn't bet against him though, as they are already selling units at a loss in order to grasp market share with their present system. Many other companies can't operate in that manner for very long. But, with MS Office and XP as a constant stream of cash coming in, the Redmond group can afford to proceed this way for as long as they like.
