BenQ believes in the DVD+RW format

Digitimes
reports
that BenQ will start shipments of its 8x DVD+R/RW
drive, the DW800A, this month and that a 12x model could follow as early as in
March next year. BenQ are at the moment only supporting the DVD+R/RW format and
according to CNet Asia BenQ's
chief executive, K. Y. Lee, does not think dual format drives are
necessary:

In
DVD drives, Lee is a believer in the DVD+RW format, not in the rival
DVD-RW format or in combination drives that can handle both. "We see today
the momentum for DVD+RW is much stronger than for DVD-RW. I cannot say (it
will) win, but it will dominate," he said.

For
future optical-storage products, BenQ is aligned with Philips and several
other consumer electronics companies behind the Blu-ray Disc technology,
not the rival Advanced Optical Disc from Toshiba and
NEC.

Lee
also expects BenQ (which stands for 'Bringing Enjoyment and Quality") to become
a global electronics giant by selling more products under the own brand name
instead of
ODM
(original design and manufacturing) on contract to other companies which
currently accounts for 70 % of BenQ's revenues
. You
