Over at DigiTimes we can read that BenQ does not wish to lower pricing on their DVD recorders just yet, after all, they say they are quite a bit cheaper than Japanese competitors already. But, with dissapointing sales figures for the HDD models staring them in the face, we have to wonder how long they will wait.

Chen noted that many second-tier makers in Taiwan plan to offer 80GB HDD DVD recorders at a retail price below NT$10,000 (US$313) in the fourth quarter of this year |
Having just purchased a nice set top recorder for my Home Theater setup, a ILO DVDR04, for less than 100 bucks, it's easy to see why these HDD models are moving at a slower pace. You can simply place a DVD-RW in the drive to capture 2,3 or even 4 hours of video at a great resolution. Then if any editing is required, place it in the PC where most have all their tools anyway, then erase the disc and pop it back in the recorder. Spending two or three times the money on a drive that contained a hard disc as well as a burner was not justifiable in my case.
