Blu-ray is bigger than Godzilla in Japan, with the format making up 31% of all DVD recorder/player shipments in the 12 months to September 2008.
Blu-ray Disc recorder/player shipments reached 138,000 units, about 107 times the shipments posted a year ago, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).
Consumer electronics shipments in Japan increased 4.5% year-on-year, driven by Blu-ray and flat panel TVs. Visual equipment shipments rose 8.2%, while Audio equipment shipments declined 14.2%.
