Just a day after volume production technology for HD DVD-R discs was announced, Pioneer Corp. and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media Co. Ltd have both jointly announced their development of Blu-ray write once-media as up until now, the only Blu-ray media that has been made available is rewritable media. Both partners have announced that they intend proposing this media as BD-R to the Blu-ray Disc Association.
Pioneer aims to take the main role in developing a write-once Blu-ray disc and both have been working together as the makers of Blu-ray media and drives since autumn 2004. According to Mitsubishi Chemical Media, BD-R's have a spin coated organic die, 0.1mm thick coating, 25GB capacity, 6% level of jitter and 40% reflection rate, which is close to that of BD-ROM.

The partners said they intend to propose the disk as the BD-R format to the Blu-ray Disc Association. Mitsubishi Kagaku Media was one of the developers of the HD DVD-R disk. It developed a separate organic die to be used in the BD format disk, a company spokesman said. Pioneer, which led development of the write-once DVD format, said it also intends to take the lead in developing a write-once disk for the BD format. Pioneer and Mitsubishi Chemical Media have been collaborating on disk development since last autumn as the drive and media makers. |
This announcement by Pioneer and Mitsubishi clearly indicates that they wish to battle away against the HD DVD developers to attract customers to their format. At least work has begun on write-once Blu-ray media, especially considering how much more popular write once DVD media is compared with rewritable DVD media.
