Blu-ray picks up MPEG-4 codec

Thanks to Music Industry News, we learn today that Blu-ray just got another feather in it's cap. It's the addition of the MPEG-4 compression codec. We all know that it will be important to have such codecs for the success of the new high definition media recorders and players. There's going to be an emphasis on playback without noticeable degradation of the original products visual quality.

With the addition of the MPEG-4 AVC High-Profile codec, we are offering content owners maximum functionality and flexibility for their high-definition packaged media," said Blu-ray Disc spokesperson Maureen Weber, general manager of HP's Optical Storage Solutions Business. "This is just one more example of Blu-ray Disc's commitment to be the best medium for high-definition packaged media.

High definition will offer an exciting new array of products for the consumer. With the steady acceptance of HD displays coupled with the admittedly slow, but inevitable arrival of high definition television broadcasts, it wont be long before we see either Blu-ray or HD-DVD equipment in many of our homes.
