Burning question for DVD: Which format?

Which
of the recordable DVD formats (DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW or DVD-RAM) that will gain the
largest market share and be the most popular format is still a controversial
question. Yahoo
News!
(Investor's Business Daily) has published a new article on the
subject:

Do
most consumers understand these standards? No, say industry officials. But
that's probably not holding them back from making a purchase, they say.

"The
average consumer probably doesn't know much about the format war," said
Kim Burch, a product manager at Hewlett-Packard Co., which uses DVD+RW
drives in its PCs. "Consumers are very comfortable choosing a drive that a
name-brand manufacturer provides."

In
other words, if HP sells them the drive, consumers trust it will work.

There's
another reason shoppers may not care much about the rival standards. Most
consumers are using their DVD recorders to burn DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs - not the
rewritable discs. Since these discs can run in most DVD players, the
format issue is largely moot.
