Buyers Advise: Don't buy 900 Mb CD's for now

XMen4u used our newssubmit to tell us about his experience with 900Mb Media. I thought it was intresting enough to share it with the rest of the visitors, as you might make this mistake too.

Here's his story:

Well ,I'm from Israel and here, we just got 90min cds (900MB+ that's what the CD cover says) I bought a pack, because I thought my 121032TS plextor would support them, but it doesn't.

It sees them as 80 mins, I tried on other burner(HP) and it didn't. I mailed Plextor, and here is what they said:

As you may or may not know that it took a long time for the 80min disc to become supported, now with the 90min disc I don't know of anyone currently supporting it. This would be for hardware and software. Plextor current stand is (not supported). I believe those disc are imported. With new technology coming with CD recorders not many companies are going to put to

much efforts in supporting 90min disc.

So i just went and changed them to 2x80mins packs. But im still in a problem where I need 2x 900mb cd and I know plextor supports 99min (but only 89min it writes to it) , so what im trying to say DONT BUY THAT MEDIA!

But that's not all, XMen4u also mailed Roxio about this and this is what Roxio said:

About 90+ minute CDs

According to the official Red Book standard, the maximum playing time for an audio CD is 74 minutes. This specification has been stretched by everyone in the industry to support 80-minute audio CDs. However, anything over 80 minutes clearly violates the specification. Most CD players and CD recorders will therefore have problems reading or writing 90-minute discs. The following problems can occur:

- CD player doesn't recognize the disc

- CD head bounces out of the groove

- CD player can't find tracks after 80 minutes

- CD can't be copied

- CD can't be read (90+ minute CDs use a very tight groove)

- CD created may contain same sector number twice

- CD created may contain a sector with a negative number

Most of these problems will result in an unreadable CD. Worse, it is even possible that trying to record or play a 90+ minute CD could physically damage the CD player or recorder. WE THEREFORE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT USE 90+ MINUTE CDs!

So if you are in a store where they sell 90+ minute CD's please think twice before you buy them. It may look great, but if your burner doesn't support them (and that's very likely) you will have to return and swap them for your normal brand. So this message is just to save you some time
