CD Freaks: Philips DVDR1648 DVD-Writer review

Today we
are pleased to announce the completion of our Philips DVDR1648 review
written by Jan70. This internal IDE drive supports 16x DVD±R, 8x/6x DVD+RW/DVD-RW and 8x/4x DVD+R DL/DVD-R DL writing. We can see quickly, by observing the
following screen shot, that Philips has opted for a bit of a different look for
this piece of hardware and we have to wonder if they have made any changes
other than cosmetic.

One thing that is definitely worth checking out,
is the addition of the included burning utility,
called SolidBurn. Briefly, SolidBurn is invoked and performs some
quick trial and error tests that can automatically determine the optimal
writing strategy for an "unknown" DVD+R or -R media.  Once
completing the tests, the drive can then write to
the disc, using the best (most reliable) strategy.

SolidBurn should prove useful as
opposed to using a "normal" drive that is forced to use a default writing
strategy when encountering an unknown media. SolidBurn, if effective, should
give us superior results. This seems to be a nice idea and could come in handy;
at least it should be fun to see just how well this system works! Of course, we
have to know the truth from the hype at CD Freaks, so why not head on over to the
review page
and see what Jan has learned about this Philips drive and
SolidBurn?

When you have finished
the review, maybe you have a question or two that wasn't covered. If so, then
please check in here or at this
dedicated forum link
and let Jan know your thoughts!
