CD Freaks presents: The Nero CD-DVD Speed guide

We are happy to announce that Editorial Staff member geno888, has just completed an in-depth users guide for Nero CD-DVD Speed. In case you don't know, Nero CD-DVD Speed is a powerful freeware utility with which you can perform various benchmark tests, using your optical drive. The software can also be used for testing the quality of your media and thus it's no surprise, that Nero CD-DVD Speed is used in all of our optical hardware reviews. In this article, Geno gives us a well thought out look at the uses for this extremely useful application. The guide offers plenty of screenshots to help you follow along.

At the time of the writing of this guide, the latest official version available was 4.51.1, and it is the version used to execute all tests and create pictures published in this guide. One thing that's nice, is it can be intimidating to just jump in and use such software for a novice, let alone understand what you are looking at. Fortunately, Geno has explained the different functions in a way that anyone can grasp, sticking to the basics, to help you get started testing your hardware and medias. Below, you can take a look at the Introduction to the article and also see a screenshot of the main interface of the program.

CD-DVD Speed is freely downloadable from its webpage and is contained in a ZIP archive. The first thing to do is extracting the executable from the zip file in a folder. The user can choose any folder, because CD-DVD Speed doesn't require installation, but it's a standalone executable.

When CD-DVD Speed starts, you'll see the main window, that appear as in the following image:

For those enthusiasts out there, that have been waiting for a chance to learn how to use this great testing tool, you can find the guide right here. Once you have gotten started, if you want to ask questions or have comments, please feel free to visit our Media Testing/Identifying Software Forum, where Moderator DrageMester, has set up a dedicated discussion thread, just for this guide.

We all want to thank Geno (with a little help from his friends at CD Freaks) for making this great effort, to help others have a bit more fun when they are using their optical drives and raise the understanding of writing to optical discs. Of course, thanks to the author of the program, Nero Software's Erik Deppe, for providing such a useful tool to the community for free, who was also kind enough to lend a hand when needed for the article.
