Everyone surely has heard of Samsung, if you have, then you already know they make some quality products. We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to test one of their latest external optical drive offerings, the SE-W164L DVD burner.
The SE-W164L supports 16x DVD±R, 8x/6x DVD+RW/-RW, and 8x/4x DVD+R DL/-R DL writing. So in case you have that large file that wont fit on a single layer DVD, you can still opt for a dual layer media with 8.5 gigabytes of capacity for the backup. But, what is also rather interesting, is this happens to be the first drive from Samsung supporting LightScribe direct disc labeling. With this system, you can burn your data, flip the disc, then burn a label right to the appropriate media using the drives laser.

For this article, Reviewer and Moderator Wendy (or Dee-27 as she is known on our CD Freaks Forums), runs the Samsung through our usual, revealing gamut of tests, to give us an idea of it's performance capabilities. In addition, using the included Firmware Live Update seen in the Writemaster features listing above, we can all see how easily the drive was kept up to date during the review, by upgrading the firmware a couple times over the Internet. In addition to normal reading, writing and ripping tests, the article takes us through the steps of creating a LightScribe decorated disc. If you would like to take a closer look, then please head on over to the review page here.
After reading the review, if you have any questions, comments or requests, please join in on the discussion in our Club CD Freaks Forums, where a dedicated thread has been provided for the SE-W164L. Thanks Wendy! Another great job.
