CMC, Optodisc grab market niches for special optical discs

GristyMcFisty used
our
news submit to tell
us that CMC Magnetics and Optodisk Technologies grabbed marked niches for
special optical disks. The two Taiwanese disk maker started with the production
of 8 cm DVDs and LightScribe enabled CDs and DVDs.

LightScribe is a patented direct-disc labeling technology
developed by Hewlett-Packard (HP).
CMC Magnetics is currently
the only licensed maker of LightScribe-enabled CD-R and DVD-R discs in
Taiwan, CMC stated. Japan-based Mitsubishi Chemical develops the special
coating material for the discs, CMC explained. LightScribe-enabled CD-R
and DVD-R discs currently sell at US$1 and US$2 each, respectively, and
CMC has so far shipped more than 750,000 discs in total, the company
indicated. The shipment volume will rise with growing use of
LightScribe-enabled DVD burners, CMC
added.
