At the moment a lot is happening in the CPU world. Prices are decreasing, new CPU's are coming etc. So I thought let's update you on some recent facts.
Let's start with Intel. They announced yesterday that the CPU prices will drop a lot. Pentium III CPU's and Celerons will drop 38% at max. The mobile Pentium III will drop 24% at max.
Ofcourse this is nice, but why are prices dropping?
Well the first reason is quite obvious: because of a competitor called AMD. As AMD CPU are cheaper than Intel CPU's (same kind same speed) it's pretty important to Intel to lower prices.
Second reason is the availability of faster CPU's; so the old ones have to "leave the scene".
Another nice CPU fact announced today is that AMD and Transmeta joined forces. As known, AMD sells really fast CPU's and Transmeta sells CPU's that consume almost no power. That could lead to a nice combi huh?
But that's not all. AMD and Transmeta are also cooperating on a 64 bit CPU. As Intel is working on the Itanium, AMD is wordkig on the Hammer family. The big difference between an Intel or an AMD 64bit CPU is that the Intel doesn't support any 32bit program like we are running right now; AMD will support those so with an AMD you can still use al your ancient software..
Another thing they are working on is a new kind of PCI bus that should garantee much higher speeds. It seems this PCI bus is gonna be a winner because companies like Cisco already bought licensies on the system.
Well Ok, I know this is not burn-related but I thought this to be quite intresting.... lower prices are always nice
