Just when the CD/DVD-Audio hybrid appeared to be the only solution to offer CD, DVD-Video and DVD-Audio all on a single disc, CS2CD Inc. now has begun its final stage with its SACD/DVD-Video hybrid disc. Like the CD/DVD-Audio flipper, CS2CD also provides legacy CD-Audio playback and DVD-Video playback but with Super Audio CD instead of DVD-Audio for its high fidelity audio content. Unlike the DVD-Audio hybrid, the CS2CD is only single sided enabling the other side to be fully labelled and reduce confusion on which way to load the disc.
The CEO and inventor of the CS2CD Mr. William wanted to offer a consumer friendly disc that was not limited to just specific equipment, by offering CD-Audio playback, DVD-Video playback, Super Audio CD playback and PC enhancement features all on one single-sided disc. cs2cd had submitted the following press release:

The CS2CD is the new consumer friendly CD format which embeds DVD video options onto traditional audio Compact Disc albums and singles. Because the CS2CD places its advanced optical construction onto a CD image, initial research and development has proven easy integration of the CS2CD to SACD hybrids. 'I may have found the missing link to the SACD full commercial potential." Says CEO and inventor of the CS2CD Mr. William Grecia. In addition he adds 'When I first invented the CS2CD, I wanted to create a disc that was consumer friendly, and offered additional features not available on other formats. Being a professional audio engineer, 5.1 and 2 channels of high resolution music is something I think people will love. For a next generation audio format to take off, their must be a product in place that give consumers a 'no choice" method of acceptance. When I say 'no choice" I am not implying to forcing products on people, but yet offering a product to consumers that work like the traditional CD they are use to while offering discrete added bonuses to use with emerging new technologies. If a user of a SA-CS2CD has only a CD player, then that's what the disc will be for them, a regular CD. If the user have or purchases a major brand DVD player, then they can enjoy the added music videos. If they have or purchase a SACD compatible system, then they maximize the full potential of their purchase. For example, let's say a SA-CS2CD version of Michael Jackson's Thriller exists. The SA-CS2CD version would offer a 5.1 surround sound high resolution and 2 channel high resolution version of the album, a standard CD version of the album, DVD playable video of 'Beat It" 'Billie Jean" and Thriller" music videos, a DVD photo slide show to music, and optional remixing and PC enhancement features. All on a single sided disc! Nothing will be able to touch it in retail! Final phase of SA-CS2CD R&D will begin after partnerships are final." CS2CD Inc. is a privately held company and administers the intellectual property holdings of Mr. Grecia. The CS2CD has been recently used by Jay-Z (DefJam) and Kool Keith (WEA). It is interesting to see a Super-Audio CD with DVD playback capabilities. Previously, it was thought not possible to have both DVD content and CD content all on a single sided disc without compatibility issues. However, in this case it is not clear how they manage to get CD, DVD and SACD content both on the same side.
One interesting challenge would be to develop a complete audio disc hybrid which will play in both Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio players while still offering CD and DVD-Video legacy support. The main likely issue here may be high royalty costs due to combining the royalty cost of the various technologies.
