According to the Industrial Economics and
Knowledge Center or (IEK), China produced about 82 million DVD players last
year. This is an astoniching 80 percent of total production in the world.
Needless to say, they have the ability to produce and the frightening part is no
one can beat their cost.
are currently more than 600 manufacturers of DVD players in China, and intense price competition has resulted in very thin margins, according to IEK. Therefore, more Chinese makers are upgrading their product lines toward OEM production of DVD recorders, IEK indicated. |
The article over at DigiTimes says that 3 quarters
of a billion IC chips were imported for the production of these
units, most of which came from Taiwan. The value of the chips alone was put
at 1.4 billion dollars U.S. One wonders how they are doing in this year, as it
seems that DVD is even more popular today.
