Cirrus Logic brings new DVD recording technology

Chipmaker Cirrus Logic has announced it has found a new DVD recording technology that should make it easy to record audio and video in real-time from any analog source, encode it into MPEG2 format, store it onto a PC for editing and save it onto DVD recordable media.

Cirrus Logic is only a chipmaker, but their products will pave the way for future consumer goods that will use the technology provided by Cirrus Logic:

The USB-DVR CS92288 reference design integrates three Cirrus parts: the CS92288 MPEG-2 A/V codec, the CS4223 audio codec and the CS4954 NTSC/PAL video encoder. The parts work together to enable sharp video recording at the widest range of bitrates, giving consumers top-quality video or maximum content storage.

Unlike software-based encoders, the product can record up to full D1 resolution images in real-time, utilizing only a very small percentage of the host PC's resources. The design also provides for video output to TVs and VCRs, which is unavailable from software-only encoders.

The reference design is the latest digital video recording offering from Cirrus, a leading provider of MPEG-2 video recording technology for multiple home applications including DVD recorders, PVRs and desktop video peripherals.
