I saw this mail in my mailbox from Roxio's newsletter. It's about creating a Bootable CD with Easy CD Creator. I know many of you people don't like this prog but I thought it could be usefull if u don't know how to do this. Also has a nice preface:
"Many years ago, when hard disks were expensive, many computers had two floppy drives -one to hold the operating system, and the other to hold the application or data files that you were using. Machines booted up from a floppy disk all the time. Even when hard disks were introduced and started to become affordable, the humble floppy disk remained as the "backup" bootable device - if you had a problem, you booted from floppy and used the tools on the disk to try to rescue and repair the machine. |
Bootable CDs for PCs, running everything from DOS to Windows and even Unix and Linux, use the El Torito! format. Because of the way in which a
bootable CD is produced, we are somewhat limited as to what we can put on a bootable CD. We cannot, for example, install Windows onto the CD - there are a number of reasons for this, starting with the way in which Windows works, especially with respect to virtual memory (if the CD is not writable, Windows has nowhere to store the virtual memory file, and disabling VM is difficult without running Windows!). We can, however, put DOS onto the CD and enough other tools such as scandisk (or chkdsk), fdisk (for disk formatting), and installers and other information. To record a bootable CD, you must first make a bootable floppy. There are two ways of doing this, and they each create a different set of functionality..."
