CyberHome obtains OEM order for Sony portable DVD players

Looks like Sony is about to enter the market with some hardware produced by CyberHome, one of the popular optical disc manufacturers that can be found on Wal-mart shelves. CyberHome, formerly known as Protop Innotech has garnered OEM orders for the portable players by beating out a host of other suiters for the electronics giants business.

Leading local makers of consumer optical disc drives, including Lite-On IT, BenQ, Quanta Storage, and Mustek System, were also interested in producing portable DVD players for Sony, industry sources pointed out. Probably because CyberHome's own-brand portable DVD players has sold well in the US and Europe, the company won the orders from Sony, the sources indicated.

CyberHome delivered an average of 200,000 portable DVD players, including loaders (semi-finished products consisting of pick-up heads and ICs), a month last year. With orders from Sony and other new clients, CyberHome expects its monthly shipment volume to reach 500,000, the company noted.

According to the report at Digi-Times, prices for portable 7" LCD DVD players may drop to as low as $100 this year, as lower cost LCD panels are becoming available and competition is intensifying.
