DVD DL discs demand market previsions

According to a news published at DigiTimes, global demand for DVD DL (single-sided double-layer) discs may more than double in 2007.

The reasons seems to be the fast growing demand for full HD (High-Definition) TV and the currently high prices of the next generation optical formats Blu-ray and HD-DVD. In my opinion, another factor is the current uncertainty of the format that will prevail in the market.

Thanks to the H.264, MPEG-4 Part 10 or other advanced video codec technologies, it is possible to put HD contents on Dual Layer DVD discs, making unnecessary the use of Blu-ray or HD-DVD, at least until prices will become more affordable.
