On ZDNet we can read that Norwegian Jon Johansen, dubbed 'DVD Jon', creator of the DVD decryption software DeCSS, is facing a new appeals court, after being acquitted by an Oslo court in January:
"The appeals court has decided to bring up the case again," Johansen's lawyer, Halvor Manshaus, said. The appeals court screens cases before deciding whether to hear them. |
The first ruling was a blow to the movie studios, which have launched a global effort to crack down on piracy and were hoping to establish a legal precedent in Europe to fight future cases.
"We have a victory behind us and we are confident with regard to the final outcome," Manshaus said. He said Johansen, who was 15 when he developed the program that unscrambled manufacturers' security safeguards on DVDs, had been prepared for an appeal.
The Motion Picture Association of America if of course very happy with this new trial which is expected to start after the summer. Read the complete article here.
