As reported here in the past, DVD Region-Free is able to let you make backups on the fly. DVD Region-Free supports programs such as DVDFab, DVD2One, Pinnacle InstantCopy, DVD Shrink and Nero Recode. During reading, the software decrypts the DVD copy protection such as CSS on the fly. Thus, reducing the time you need to make a DVD backup since it is unnecessary to decrypt to the hard drive first.
DVDIdle is claimed to help make your drive last longer and remain cooler. It also makes use of a "smart read ahead cache" in ram and the hard drive to relieve the optical drive.
The new DVDIdle Pro Version 3.05 is out as well and is a combination of both products.
