Dell intros Latitude XT2 Multitouch Tablet

Dell has officially announced its Latitude XT2 convertible tablet PC that uses integrated multi-touch technology to offer a unique user experience with the device.

Users are able to pinch, scroll, rotate, pan and zoom in on their intended workspace, and can use both regular programs and software designed specifically for touchscreens. A switch located on the side of the XT2 can turn it into a regular screen that requires a stylus pen as opposed to fingerpoint gestures, which adds flexibility into how it's used.

The Latitude XT2 has a 12.1-inch multi-touch screen, with a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz processor and up to 5GB DDR3 ram. Shoppers can select either an 80GB or 120GB HDD, or select a 64GB solid state drive. The device is shipping with either Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. Users can also request a built-in keyboard, touchpad, and scroll wheel, according to Dell.

XT2 is 0.98-inches thick and weighs just 3.78-pounds, which makes it an ideal travel laptop for business people.

The use of a 6-cell battery alongside an additional battery slice offers up to 11 hours of battery life, Dell said. Rather than cater to a niche group of people interested in using the XT2 as a gaming device, Dell decided to stick with the rather unimpressive Intel integrated GMA 4500MHD graphics.

Pricing starts at $2,399, and the device will initially be available starting in the United States and United Kingdom.

Touchscreens have become increasingly popular among consumers, especially as manufacturers continue to work out the kinks in the technology.
