Disney throws support behind Sony's Blu-ray format

Like Yogi Berra says: "It ain't over until it's over". Who would have thought that Disney and Buena Vista Home Entertainment would jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon after the recent events we have been reading? Even with four major studios and a new hybrid HD DVD from Toshiba designed to build a bridge to high def, Disney likes Blu-ray!

"Blu-ray's excellent combination of advanced functionality, picture quality, data capacity, room for future growth and advanced rights management for new consumer usage options will provide consumers with an outstanding interactive filmed entertainment experience," said BVHE president Robert Chapek.

The company said a single-layer Blu-ray disc will hold up to 25 gigabytes of data and a dual-layer disc will hold up to 50 gigabytes, allowing discs to store up to five times the amount of content compared to existing DVDs.

The decision by Disney was expected but is highly strategic as Hollywood's major studios fight it out over the adoption of a new standard for DVDs in a battle that is shaping up to be similar to the 1980s struggle between VHS and Betamax video formats.

Well according to the quote this was an expected move, but certainly it is still a surprise to some. Where will this take us now? Will we have two formats? It sure is starting to look like it! I know we have all said it, but this is Betamax versus VHS all over again. It's ridiculous. We sure as heck are not going to buy two machines, but who knows which side will have the content we want.

Just some of the content found at Disney will include films
from Miramax and Touchstone. A lot of great movies that we will want came out
of Touchstone! Somebody needs to step in and stop this mess. But
who?
