Thanks to simon_bethor and magix we know that yesterday a new
version of the DivX Pro codec, Dr. DivX software and DivX Player
software have been released. Most of our users will know DivX, it's a codec with which
you can compress video data without loosing too much of the original
quality. The Dr. DivX software lets you turn any video (DVD, DV movies, etc.) into a DivX
file in 3 simple steps. And, last but not least, the DivX Player software
is (of course) the official playback application for DivX Video. Below
are the huge changelogs of all
the updates:
DivX Pro v5.2 Version History:
New:
- Localized versions for French, German
and Japanese
- Bi-directional coding using an
adaptive method
- Fully adaptive multiple consecutive
B-frames
- MPEG-2/H.263 quantization choice
- Built-in bitrate calculator
- Update checking tool
- Automatic update notification for the
DivX encoder
- Fast mode, revamped for better
performance, compression and quality
- Feedback mode which is now
multithreaded, taking advantage of HyperThreaded or dual CPU for better
efficiency
- 3 point GMC support in the DivX
decoder
Changed:
- "Slowest" mode removed as the quality
differential with "Slow" mode was insignificant, yet the performance
differential was massive
- DivX Pro Adware bundle replaced by
DivX Pro 6-month free trial
Improved:
- Smooth playback supporting multiple
consecutive B-frames
- Quantizer, now using quant scale in
video packets
Fixed
(Encoder):
- A rare issue where rate control
sometimes inserted Q=31 frames in video combining low light conditions,
high bitrate and specific motion patterns
- Fastest mode to respect the
user-specified average bitrate (Old "Fastest" behavior can be obtained
by disabling profiles and performing 1-Pass, Quality-based encoding with
Q=3)
Fixed
(Decoder):
- A crash occurring in some rare cases
with clips that have dimensions divisible only by 2 and use YUY2 color
mode
- Black screen when decoding old buggy
MPEG-4 clips that lack VOL header
- Internal flush operation with "Smooth
playback" feature
- Intra inverse quantization (type 1)
- Support for generic MPEG-4 (XVID and
3ivX)
- Data partitioning clip
- Deblocking to no longer cause solid
blocks to appear during playback
- DivX decoder to always play DivX video
Dr. DivX v1.0.5 Version History:
New:
- Surround sound AC-3 audio support
- High Definition transport stream
encoding
- MP3 CBR/VBR audio encoding support
- Audio boost to fix low audio encoding
- Audio stream name detection from DVD
input (must have IFO file)
- Additional 15 day trial extension
- Latest 5.2 codec
- Adaptive bi-directional coding
- MPEG-2 quantization
- Bitrate calculator
- Automatic updates
Improved:
- The DVD backup VOB analysis
- Video analysis
- File input analysis
- MP3 audio bitrate level options
- Simplicity of registration and
activation process
- Accuracy of file splitting
- DV encoding to incur less dropped
frames
- Accounting for RIFF chunk overhead
resulting in more accurate file sizes
- Interlaced/progressive settings
Fixed:
- Slow audio bug for certain DV cameras
- Dropped frames when capturing to DV
- Duration analysis bug which caused
MPEG-2 streams to be detected with shorter durations
- Crashes and halts which occurred when
a third party AC3 decoder was not present
- A bug causing DV audio to be slowed
when sampling rate was below 44.1 Khz
- The opening of transport (.ts) stream
files
- Encoding for playback on PocketPC
player
- A bug wherein file splitting would
cause a crash on 2nd pass
- A bug that caused Dr. DivX to crash
when using VirtualDub filters
- A bug wherein changing the MV path
could cause an MV error in two pass encodes (MV is now removed from the
codec and Dr. DivX as a feature)
- An issue with hidden DivX and Custom
Profile area
DivX Player Version
History:
New:
- DivX 5.2 decoder integrated into the
DivX Player application
- Localized versions for French, German
and Japanese
- Support for playback of High
Definition clips < 2GB in file size at 720p and 1080p resolutions
(720p playback requires a minimum system of 2.4Ghz, 384 RAM, 64 MB VRAM
or better. 1080p playback requires a minimum system of 3.0 Ghz, 512 RAM,
128 VRAM or better. Best viewing is achieved with post processing levels
set to a minimum.)
- Enhanced MPEG-4 playback support (The
DivX Player can now play an even greater range of MPEG-4 videos using
the DivX 5.2 decoder.)
- Multiple speeds for Fast Forward and
Rewind (Clicking the Fast Forward and Rewind controls multiple times
changes the Fast Forward and Rewind rate.)
- Link to the DivX Player version
history added to the DivX Player main menu
- Link to check for DivX Player updates
added to the start menu and the DivX Player main menu
- Administrative access added as a
requirement to DivX Player minimum system requirements
- 16-bit color depth and 64 thousand
colors added as requirements to the DivX Player minimum player
requirements
Improved:
- Smoothness during playback and reduced
drive activity of files stored on CDs and DVDs
- The automatic check for updates
feature (You will be prompted when new updates are available and have
the option of installing those updates.)
- The clarity of the message in the
feedback window when attempting to playback a Video-on-Demand movie not
originally purchased with the same username
Fixed:

along high-contrast edges, mainly affecting anime content
- A bug causing links to Movie purchase
pages not to work with a "?" in the URL
- A bug causing the DivX Player to not
release file handles until it completely closes out
- An audio bug caused during playback of
files containing AC3 audio when having AC3 .70b installed
- Miscellaneous problems with computers
that have onboard video cards, including audio only/black screen and
miscellaneous player crashes
- A bug that caused errors when opening
a file from a network location by double-clicking on that file
- A bug disabling the "Cancel"
button when opening a new movie in fullscreen mode, only allowing the
"Open File" dialog to be dismissed using the close button (i.e.,
"X")
