In the Netherlands the laws aren't as strict as in the USA for now, but because the country is member of the European Uninion it will also suffer from the more strict European copyright laws. The country is however pretty active in chasing pirates and has been succesfull in busting several big piracy groups that used manufacturing plants to produce CDs and DVDs, stuffed with illegal software (CrazyBytes, Twilight, Onyx).
The country has currently two main organistations that keep track of the pirates, the BUMA/Stemra(known for the KaZaA case) and an organistation called Brein. This organisation is very active and is mainly chasing internet sites that sell pirated software on CD/DVD. One of the most populair products is currently the MP3 DVD, filled with thousands of pirated music files.
Brein suspects that the amount of home made CD-Rs has been increased from 12.5 to 16.3 million in about one year. On the other hand, the amount of professional pirated CDs containing music and movies decreased to 1.5 million copies. |
Stichting Brein (Bescherming Rechten Entertainment Industrie Nederland) fights against piracyu and according to the organistation there is only a small amount (about 5.000 - 10.000) cd-pirates responsible for about 90% of the Dutch piracy. That is why the organisation has decided to focus the next half year on these big pirates.
Esspecially the amount of MP3 DVDs is increasding. "On these DVDs fit about 40 albums including covers", declares Brein CEO Tim Kuik in it's company newspaper.
"The goal is to bust those who sell the illegal products to the consumers."
