Dutch internet provider installs PeerCache, caches KaZaA content

The Dutch part
of the European internet service provider (ISP) Wanadoo has announced it has
installed PeerCache, a caching system developed by JoltID, formerly known as
FastTrack, developers of KaZaA. The software is installed on local servers of
the ISP and should reduce the amount of bandwidth (and costs) used by KaZaA and
speed up downloads for customers of the provider.

If a KaZaA user is connected trough Wanadoo the
software will first check if the requested file is in the PeerCache of the
provider, if it is the file will be downloaded directly from the cache, else it
will still be downloaded from the other computer. Normally only a direct transer
is possible, KaZaA only downloads from the computer where the file is stored.
The difference with the Wanadoo setup is that most asked files are split in
unrecognisable parts and stored on the servers of the ISP.

The provider claims that it is fully legal and that
it has reduced the costs of the ISP. Other Dutch ISPs have also tested the
software but were not satisfied with the results. However from countries where
bandwidth is very expensive (Eastern Europe, Japan) there is a lot of intrested
in the PeerCaching technology.
