GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that last Sunday eighteen
people were arrested in England for piracy.
In a joint anti-piracy operation involving BPI, FACT and ELSPA, over 100
police officers took part in the raid where they seized an estimated £10 (US$
17) million-worth of counterfeit CDs and DVDs:
carried out today on private addresses in the Rochdale area, Greater Manchester. Three people were arrested under the Trade Marks Act and a large amount of copying equipment with thousands of counterfeit music and film discs were seized. The operations are part of a concerted drive to crack down on piracy in the run-up to Christmas. Many high profile releases are launched in the final quarter and the music pirates are quick to react with counterfeits of the best-selling new titles. David Martin, Director of Anti Piracy at the BPI added, "The Inglistone raid is a good example of how we are carrying out more joint initiatives and sharing intelligence with our counterparts in the films and software industries: where you find counterfeit music, the chances are you'll find fake games and films so it makes sense to work together." |
