First signs of NEC ND-2500 overclocked to ND-2510 (adds double layer writing)

Jaydee78 used our news submit to tell us that the first screenshots of a NEC-ND2500 at 2510 have been posted. The NEC ND-2510 will be the follow up of the NEC-ND2500 with double layer writing capacities added. The firmware of the NEC-ND2510 that has been used by the poster on our forum supports two kinds of double layer media from Verbatim (MKM001) and Ricoh (RICOHJPNR001) (thanks to Liggy). Besides that there's also a screenshot of Nero Infotool posted.

This is intresting information as this means that it will very likely be possible to overclock a ND-2500 to a ND-2510. However there is a big but. It is unlikely that all ND-2500 drives will be able to correctly write to double layer media. Writing to this media requires very good quality parts, certainly of the Optical Pickup Unit (OPU) and since NEC has never claimed that the ND-2500 could write to double layer discs it could be possible that only a small amount of ND-2500 drives will work with double layer discs. But only testing when there is double layer available on the market will tell how many ND-2500's will be able to write double layer discs with the ND-2510 firmware.

For more information you can follow the discussion in our NEC Forum. Note that we do not offer the modified
firmware for download.
