French sign government charter against illegal MP3 downloads

b314x used our news submit to tell us "I hope this doesn"t happen in the UK. But why would ISPs want to do this, all they are doing is losing customers not only if they are kicked off but alot of customers will not choose them in the first place and go to a ISP that doesn"t ban music downloading."

French ISPs have decided to club together to stomp on pirates who download music on their networks.

The group have all signed a government-backed charter in which they pledge to disconnect pirates and step up cooperation with copyright prosecutions. The big signers include Free, Noos, Club-Internet, Wanadoo and Tiscali France.

The Inquirer article goes on to say that the ISP's may be trying to avoid future litigation by showing their support to the music industry. However, the ink wasn't dry on the charter and it was disclosed that they do not intend to discontinue accounts without a judges order. So it remains to be seen what impact this signing will have.
