On FurthurNet.org we can read about a new, non commercial, open
source, peer to peer network of legal live music. The software for the network
is currently in beta development, but can already been downloaded. FurtherNet
aims to only share music of artists that allow taping of
concerts.
Currently the only way to legally download music are the
download sites from PressPlay and MusicNet that are in control by the major
record labels. FurthurNet is managed by volunteers and has no commercial
objective.
taping and trading of their live performances are allowed on the Furthur
Network. This would include bands like the Grateful
Dead, Phish, Allman Brothers
Band, String Cheese
Incident, Widespread
Panic, Phil Lesh and
Friends, Dave Matthews
Band and many other up and coming and
other well known bands. A complete list of Allowable Bands can be found in
our Taper-Friendly
BandList.
This seems to be a good initiative and hopefully more bands
and DJs will allow their performance to be taped. If you want to learn more
about FurthurNet, then visit their website.
