Getac introduces rugged GPS unit

The manufacturer best known for creating laptops and tablet computers designed for higher durability has announced a new GPS unit that has a built-in camera and is also focused on durability.

The new device, a Getac PS535F, is a GPS unit with a built-in 3-megapixel camera, E-compass, and altimeter, the company said in a press statement.  The Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1-powered device also makes use of proprietary software that makes interacting with the GPS unit easier.  The unit has an estimated 8 hours of battery life.

"Enterprise customers today have come to expect seamless and accurate information exchange between head office and field workers to improve overall operational efficiency and productivity," the company said in a statement.

Owners will be able to transmit images from certain locations directly to another user or back to an office, with the ability to tether a Bluetooth mobile phone or modem to the GPS unit.

Even though the popularity of PDAs has drastically died down due to the introduction of mobile phones then smartphones, they're still a necessity in some sectors.  Specifically, Getac hopes consumers working in rugged zones have a need for a hybrid GPS/PDA like the PS535 -- powered by a 533MHz Samsung 2450 processor with 128MB internal RAM.  The GPS unit also has 2GB of onboard storage.
