More positive news from Business Wire this morning concerning the debut of the much anticipated HD-DVD media and hardware. According to the HD DVD Promotion Group, key disc and equipment manufacturers in the industry have all confirmed the ability to produce the high definition discs in "high volume". They have even provided "tangible data" to back up their claims for feasible and realistic production.

M2 Engineering AB in Sweden began selling its HD DVD production system SQ200 in May 2005. "Our SQ200 has been producing single and dual layer HD DVD-ROM discs for more than a year at our test facility in Stockholm, Sweden," said Andreas Andersson, Product Manager of M2 Engineering AB. "We designed the SQ200 HD DVD production system for economical mass production of HD DVDs, and the production cost is on par with standard DVD production." |
In addition, the disc manufacturers are also ready to supply us consumers, at least Memory-Tech Corporation, Japan's largest independent disc replicator. In May 2004, Memory-Tech installed seven volume production lines that can produce both HD DVD and DVD discs, and more than one million HD DVD-ROM discs have been produced for evaluation purposes on these lines. That's a bunch!
Bring it on, can't wait for the new content and products to start hitting the market! Soon, we begin the second half, so we have to expect Blu-ray will make some sort of announcement as well, once they see this press release. First to market in this game is going to be a serious advantage. Once eager customers invest in one format, they are less likely to abandon one for the other late comer.
