Toshiba's HD-A2 player is set to go on sale this Friday for $98.87 (~€69 ex. VAT), making it the first time either format has broken the $100 barrier. It was not that long ago Wal-Mart became the one of the first retailers to announce Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD player for $198, which resulted in Circuit City and Amazon both pricing the HD-A2 at $197.99 on their respective online stores.
While Wal-Mart mentions that it will only be available at certain stores until its stock has exhausted, if it decides to continue HD DVD players for around this price, the Blu-ray format will certainly need to watch out. At this price, the player is not far off the price of a decent HD upscaling player and a fraction of the cost of a PS3, let alone a Blu-ray disc player!
